The Jurassic Opening Scenes Ranked
One of my favourite parts about the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies are their opening scenes. Ever since the famous opening scene of the original Jurassic Park, Jurassic opening scenes have always been great at building suspense and introducing a plot. And a lot of the time, these short scenes are the best scenes of the entire movie. In this article, I am going to rank every Jurassic opening scene from worst to best.
#5: JURASSIC WORLD (2015)
If I were to rank every Jurassic movie just on the movie itself, Jurassic World would be second best. However, this opening scene just doesn't do it for me; it doesn't meet the standards of every other opening scene. I feel that Jurassic World could be ten times better if only it had a better opening scene. The scene is important for introducing us to the newest dinosaur, the Indominous Rex, however, I feel like so much more could have been done with this scene. Someone getting eaten by a dinosaur is generally a must-include for Jurassic opening scenes. But all this scene does is show us a dinosaur hatching from an egg which we have already seen before. Don't get me wrong, this scene is certainly well-done as far as cinematography goes and introduces us to Michael Giacchino's creepy take on John Williams' classic Jurassic Park theme. Nonetheless, I can think of numerous other ways of doing this scene and achieving the same effect.
#4: JURASSIC PARK III (2001)
Jurassic Park III's opening scene may be at this end of the list, however, it is much better than Jurassic World's opening scene. The scene does a perfect job of introducing the plotline of the movie as well as the new characters. The audience gets a hint of dinosaurs eating people which can sometimes be better than dinosaurs actually eating people. There is no better feeling for Jurassic fans than seeing nosy tourists sailing in the waters surrounding Isla Sorna. My only problem with this scene is that it opens up a question that is never answered throughout the movie. After seeing the movie many times, I am still slightly confused by this opening scene.
#3: THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (1997)
As I said earlier, there is nothing better for Jurassic fans than seeing tourists exploring the "RESTRICTED" area around Costa Rica. This scene introduces us to a new species of dinosaur which fans had been wanting to see lifted from the pages of Michael Crichton's original Jurassic Park novel. In fact, this scene is taken directly from that original novel. The scene reveals that there aren't only dinosaurs on one island leaving us wondering what will come of this movie. We get the hint that a dinosaur is eating somebody and doesn't leave us with any unanswered questions making it third on this list.
#2: JURASSIC PARK (1993)
Generally, the original Jurassic Park is my favourite Jurassic movie in all aspects including this opening scene. However, that one other Jurassic movie has a slightly better opening scene making Jurassic Park second on this list. This scene was the first-ever Jurassic scene and has certainly remained memorable. This was going to be our first look at how director Steven Spielberg managed to bring dinosaurs to the big screen. And of course, we don't actually get to see a full dinosaur. We are introduced to the infamous velociraptor, who is going to cause the most problems for the Jurassic Park guests. However, viewers are only able to make out single body parts of the raptor as it attempts to eat one of the park workers. We don't get to see a full dinosaur until slightly later on in the movie and don't get to see a full velociraptor until towards the end of the movie, making sure that the audience remains in their seats. This scene would easily make my top five favourite Jurassic scenes.
#1: JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM (2018)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the latest Jurassic movie (but not for much longer!) with an incredible opening scene. Not only is this undoubtedly the best Jurassic opening scene, but it is arguably the best scene in the entire Jurassic Park / World franchise. I'd even go as far as to say that this is one of my favourite scenes from cinema. The movie shows off not one, but two dinosaurs in their full CGI glory. It also hints at another fan-favourite dinosaur. This movie has some of the best suspense ever seen in any Jurassic movie with the entire audience sitting on the edge of their seats. The audience knows what is about to happen whilst the characters are oblivious to the dinosaurs preying on them. The scene sets up the plot for the film but leaves us with questions that are (thankfully!) answered later on. However, this scene also leaves us in anticipation of the next Jurassic World movie. Even after watching this scene many times, I still get excited just thinking about it.
That is every Jurassic Park and Jurassic World opening scene to date. However, where will the opening scene for Jurassic World: Dominion fit on this list? I have no idea, but I cannot wait to find out this Friday!
