THE INCREDIBLE HULK (M) Review

28/03/2021

The Incredible Hulk (2008) is Marvel Studios' take on the iconic green superhero. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is on the run from the US government after a radiation accident caused him to turn into a terrifying monster every time he gets angry. He must learn to control his emotions as he hunts for the cure for the monster.

The Incredible Hulk is an adequate movie. It has a simple storyline but has a way to make it feel complicated and intense. All the characters have very clear ambitions which creates a real sense of purpose. The actors make the audience feel quite attached to all the characters which adds a lot of depth to the movie. The most enjoyable parts of the movie were when we saw Banner struggling with his emotions and trying to contain the Hulk.

At times, I felt there was too much CGI, particularly in the final battle. In addition, the CGI was unrealistic. In a movie such as this, where the main character is computer generated, this problem can be difficult to overcome. The director cleverly avoids this dilemma at the beginning of the movie when we first meet the Hulk. The camera focuses on those trying to contain his power, and the destruction he creates, rather than the Hulk himself. Not only does this create suspense, but it also means that the unrealistic CGI isn't seen. Although this strategy worked in this particular part of the movie, it was not used for later scenes.

When the The Incredible Hulk began, I felt like we were already part-way through the movie. The opening credits briefly show the accident and only shows enough for the audience to be intrigued. Although this didn't make the audience feel confused, I would have liked to see more of what had happened to create the Hulk. The way the movie started worked, I just think that it could have been done differently and maybe would have worked better a different way.

If you are doing what I'm doing and watching all the MCU movies on Disney+ then you'll notice that The Incredible Hulk isn't actually on Disney+. This is because Universal Studios owns the rights to the movie. If you don't wish to buy the movie from another platform, then it doesn't matter that much if you miss this Marvel movie. It doesn't link much to any other movies so isn't necessary, but is enjoyable if you want more Marvel!

The Incredible Hulk is another decent Marvel movie for those who love the character and want to learn about the complex origin story of Bruce Banner.
