STAR WARS: RESISTANCE (PG) Full Series Review

21/11/2021

Star Wars: Resistance is yet another Star Wars tv show! The show is set during the events of the sequel trilogy, an era in Star Wars that hasn't been explored much outside of the movies. The show revolves around Resistance amateur spy Kazuda Xiono (Christopher Sean) as he is placed on a refuelling station valuable to the First Order. Star Wars: Resistance never received as much love as any of the other Star Wars tv shows and I wanted to know why.

All of the animated Star Wars tv shows (excluding The Bad Batch) began as kids tv shows aimed at a younger audience but then matured into more serious series. This worked out well for a show such as The Clone Wars as it matured with its audience however proved to be problematic later on as it is now unclear who the target audience is. Star Wars: Resistance is similarly aimed towards kids but continued with the same target audience throughout the whole series. This resulted in a more consistent series. Star Wars: Resistance did however only have two seasons and it is hard to say what would have happened if they had made more.

One thing I enjoyed about Star Wars: Resistance was the humour. Previous Star Wars animated shows have tried to be funny but never really made me laugh. The humour in Star Wars: Resistance was actually funny and genuinely made me laugh. I can imagine some Star Wars fans not enjoying this humour and would have liked a more serious show which may be why the show never became as popular. But the show made a very clear decision as to who its target audience was and older Star Wars fans may not enjoy the show purely because it wasn't made for them. Older Star Wars fans have shows like The Mandalorian to watch anyway.

I feel quite alienated saying that I really liked Star Wars: Resistance since I have never come across another Star Wars fan who enjoyed it as I did. Not to mention that the show got a 59% average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and 5/10 from IMDb users. But the people who leave those ratings on these websites would be older viewers; viewers who do not fall into the target audience of the show. If younger kids left reviews on these websites, then the ratings would probably be much higher.

This is not to say that I didn't have criticisms about the show. I thought the show was a little too exaggerated, I noticed a couple of inconsistencies and was sort of annoyed that the background characters were repeated so much. But all of these nit-picks are things that kids would not notice! I only noticed them because I am older than the average viewer and was specifically looking for things that the show did wrong. I also personally didn't like the animation style but I didn't feel that it took anything away from the show.

Although I did enjoy the show, I'm not dying to see it again like some of the other Star Wars tv shows but I know that the target audience will enjoy this show a lot. I would recommend it for the younger Star Wars fans aged between five and ten years old.

Star Wars: Resistance is another high-quality Star Wars show. I found the show to be genuinely funny and I can only imagine younger fans getting more out of the slap-stick jokes. The show expands the sequel era of Star Wars and could be enjoyable for hard-core Star Wars fans such as me, but should generally be left for younger viewers.
