SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (M) Review

27/02/2022

All the best movies have post-credits scenes. The same goes for reviews so be sure to stick around until the end of this one if youv'e already seen Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Spider-Man: No Way Home is the highly anticipated third instalment in the popular MCU Spider-Man franchise. After Spider-Man's secret identity is revealed to the world, Peter Parker seeks out Doctor Strange for help to make the world forget that he is Spider-Man. Strange casts a spell that goes terribly wrong as villains from other universes (universes being other Spider-Man movies that weren't previously considered canon) enter the universe that we have come to love also known as Earth-199999.

Pretty much anyone who has ever liked any Marvel or Spider-Man movie has been super excited for this movie, including me. That also means that many people were scared they would be disappointed and it's possible that many were disappointed. Was I disappointed? Not exactly. Spider-Man: No Way Home was an incredible movie and I'll get into the great things about it later, but there were a couple of things that I was a little disappointed about. For starters, I was hoping for the anti-hero Eddie Brock, aka Venom, to make more of an appearance. Additionally, I thought that this movie might show us some more multiverse shambles and maybe hint at how characters such as Deadpool would be entering the MCU. I also noticed a couple of plotholes that could be easily fixed in the future with one line of dialogue but are still there. But apart from these couple of nitpicks, I thought that the movie was amazing!

Spider-Man: No Way Home was just like all the previous Spider-Man movies where Tom Holland is playing the protagonist. Although this movie took a slightly darker turn than the previous Spider-Man movies, it remained quite light and only felt like it had matured rather than darkened which fitted the growth of Peter Parker. I found this movie to be one of the funniest Marvel movies, although I still haven't seen all of them so am only making this call based on the ones I have seen. Like all the other Spider-Man movies, No Way Home stood out from the Marvel movies. The movies feel quite different to the standard Marvel movies but definitely in a way that I love.

The first 30 minutes to an hour of Spider-Man: No Way Home were fairly predictable. If you'd seen the trailers then nothing came as much of a surprise and it was fairly obvious what was going to happen next. However, the rest of the movie was far from predictable which meant that the expected nature of the first act was not painful to watch. In some ways, it was nice for the first parts of the movie to be somewhat foreseeable. Nevertheless, Spider-Man: No Way Home only got better and better as the movie progressed. The quality of the movie only increased as more and more layers were added.

One of the biggest highlights for me from this movie was the chemistry between all the characters. All the main characters remained true to their characteristics originated in previous films but developed their characters even more in response to events happening in this latest instalment. Although the actors and actresses were great on their own, the best parts were when the three best friends, portrayed by Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon, interacted. The friendship between the characters seemed so genuine and the audience felt included in this friendship as well.

Prior to seeing No Way Home, I had only seen the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies. I knew that the movie was going to tie in well with all the Spider-Man movies; even the ones that aren't currently part of the MCU. So I read a synopsis and watched the trailers for every other Spider-Man movie. I would recommend anyone does this before seeing No Way Home. Throughout the movie, there were a few moments that I didn't quite understand as well as some jokes that were obviously in reference to other Spider-Man movies. So in saying this, I think that people who have seen and love every single Spider-Man movie will love No Way Home. However, the movie will still be adored by those who have only seen the Tom Holland movies and could still be enjoyed by those who haven't seen any Spider-Man movies.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is officially my new favourite Marvel movie. It has the highest rating out of any Marvel movie reviewed by me and essentially has everything that a Marvel movie can offer, plus more! The acting and chemistry was a highlight for me however the story, stunt choreography and special effects were also amazing. Although I did pick up on a couple of plotholes, these could easily be ignored. I also have to add that No Way Home has arguably the best teaser trailer ever!

There is one more thing I want to talk about but there is no way (see what I did there) I could talk about it without spoiling the entire film. Only read ahead if you have seen the movie or think you will never see it in your life. There are big spoilers ahead but if you have seen the movie and want to know my thoughts on the 'big reveal' then continue scrolling. You've been warned!

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

The chemistry between those three Spider-Men was excellent! It was always going to be a challenge to have three different actors playing the same character, especially a character as iconic as Spider-Man. But all the Spider-Men stayed true to their interpretation of the character and weren't swayed by having two other actors play the character differently. Although it was predicted by many people, having those characters in the movie made it ten times better. Thank you so much to Sony and Marvel and well done to Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire for bringing back such amazing characters.
