MUSIC AND LYRICS (PG) Review
Music and Lyrics follows the story of an outdated pop singer (Hugh Grant) who hires the help of his gardener (Drew Barrymore), to write a song in a couple of days. We follow the story of how the two fall in love and as Drew Barrymore's character finds her way in the music business.
Going into the movie, I wasn't exactly sure how much I'd enjoy Music and Lyrics. It didn't seem to have anything which made me excited. But after watching a hilarious music video with a bunch of middle-aged men having so much fun in the opening definitely got me interested.
Music and Lyrics is very funny. I'm sure I've mentioned on this website many times before that I enjoy humour the most when it is clean and not inappropriate. I always prefer this kind of humour as it can be just as funny and doesn't ever make you feel uncomfortable. Music and Lyrics had that kind of humour which made the movie much more enjoyable in my opinion.
I find that in some comedy movies, the humour can be great but other elements such as acting, plot or dialogue aren't as good as they could be. This is because the filmmakers are too focused on making it funny so consequently make the movie not as realistic, have a cheap storyline or the characters feel too shallow. I found that Music and Lyrics did not follow this stereotype. The acting was still amazing (as you'd expect with these big names) and the storyline was original and maintained depth.
In saying all this, when a comedy movie is too emotional, this emotion will feel out of place and will be just as bad as having no depth at all. I felt that Music and Lyrics had a good amount of emotion and themes. It did not get lost amongst the gags but wasn't too prominent. There was enough for you to feel something and take a message away from the movie.
One of the most enjoyable parts for me was Hugh Grant's character of Alex Fletcher. The character was so unique and Hugh Grant portrayed him to perfection. I also have to commend him for his dance moves. A+ for effort. I also have to mention Drew Barrymore and the portrayal of her character. She made the character very realistic and authentic. The character had little habits which made her feel like any person you would meet. I will also love any movie with Brad Garrett and his soothing voice.
Although the movie is rated PG, I wouldn't recommend it for young kids mainly because I don't think that they would appreciate it as much. I think that it is best for adults and young adults.
Music and Lyrics is another movie which I like to describe as nice. It had a nice and original storyline, nice and pure humour, nice and foolproof acting, as well as a comfortable run time. Ideal for any Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore and Brad Garrett fans as well as any adults or young adults who enjoy cheerful content.
