CRAZY RICH ASIANS (PG) Re-Viewed
Crazy Rich Asians is based on a novel of the same name released a few years before the release of the film. It follows the son of a rich family in Singapore who brings his girlfriend home for his best friend's wedding. However, his girlfriend is unaware of his family's power and influence and is caught off-guard by the celebrity-like life that she would be entering.
The storyline (and the title) of Crazy Rich Asians may sound a bit odd and not particularly appealing. However, this movie is pulled off very well. This is all thanks to director Jon M. Chu. Jon M. Chu is the director of the more recent In The Heights which is also a fantastic movie (you can read my full thoughts on the movie here). You can certainly notice the similarities between the two movies. They both have an obvious uplifting and positive vibe about them. They are both fun movies without anything unnecessarily deep or an overly complex storyline.
I'll admit, the acting in Crazy Rich Asians can be a little off at times, particularly from the two leads. Don't get me wrong, there are some brilliant actors with brilliant acting in this movie. However, I'm mainly thinking of those two leads (plus some other characters) who sometimes make it a little too obvious that their lines are pre-prepared. But I don't find this to be off-putting in this kind of movie. No one is going to go and win an Academy Award for outstanding acting from Crazy Rich Asians but that's ok. The acting in this movie doesn't need to be Marryl Streep-quality to be able to enjoy the movie.
Oh, and did I mention that this movie is funny? There are some hilarious lines in this movie, said by hilarious characters! Any movie with Awkwafina is bound to be funny. Every word that comes out of her mouth causes the audience to break into laughter.
I haven't written much about this movie but that's really all I can say. This movie is just what I would call pure entertainment; a movie that was made to entertain its audience for two hours. And it certainly succeeds in that goal. Crazy Rich Asians doesn't require too much brain power to be enjoyed. A nice movie for a Friday night movie session after a big week. I would seriously recommend this movie to anyone who wants a nice entertaining movie for a relaxing night.
