CAPTAIN MARVEL (M) Review
Captain Marvel is one of Marvel Studios' latest blockbuster movies. It follows the story of Captain Marvel as she struggles to find her place in a large-scale galactic war. She learns much about her past on this journey and uncovers some uncomfortable truths.
I'm going to say upfront that this movie was all right. Just all right. It had some good things going on, but also some not so good things. Firstly, I found the storyline quite confusing. Going back and forth through the timeline made the plot harder to understand. I think that the directors presented the story in this way to make the audience a bit puzzled and therefore hook them into the movie, but it made watching the movie a worse experience than it could have been. I wasn't entirely hooked anyway; I thought that the movie felt too long and I also thought a couple of times that I needed to get up and do something physical.
Additionally, there were many aspects of the movie which felt like we were in a Star Wars movie. Being a Star Wars fan, this should have been a good thing, but I wanted to experience a Marvel movie, not a Star Wars one. I found myself constantly thinking 'they've stolen that from Star Wars'.
Like I said before, though, there were some good parts about Captain Marvel. The excellent fight choreography; some authentic humour; and the way Captain Marvel's story was able to fit in with the rest of the Marvel universe was an admirable aspect.
This movie just felt too complicated. Even trying to figure out who the bad guys were required too much thought. I wanted to like the movie but it felt like too much to think about. I would not recommend this for someone who wants a nice simple movie after a long day. The only people I would really recommend this movie for would be Marvel fans. I don't think that the story is necessary to enjoy the rest of the films.
Captain Marvel is an action-packed movie not for those who like to do little thinking whilst watching a movie.
